Day #15 – Outside the Window

There were dark clouds in the sky when we got into the car to head for Mt. Hood yesterday. No sooner did we hit the road than plump drops began to spatter across the windshield.
The winding road that went up the mountain had a dramatic backdrop.
The clouds clung to the hills and swirled around the road. At times, it was scary, albeit breathtaking.
As soon as we turned from the main highway to go up to Timberline Lodge, it began to snow….HARD. We picked up a young man who worked at the lodge who was at the intersection hitchhiking. Said he was a native Washingtonian who had pitched a tent near Government Camp and was spending the summer working as a dishwasher and snowboarding during his time off.
We drove upward toward the peak of Mt. Hood until we finally arrived at Timberline Lodge. You may remember it from the movie, “The Shining,” starring Jack Nicholson.
There was snow everywhere and it was also raining, so rather than hike out back as we usually do, we just went into the main lodge for lunch. We sat in the upstairs dining area with a window view of the beautiful snow.
We dined on delicious salads and cheese fondu. The snow and rain stopped before we finished eating.
After we ate, we explored the lodge a bit. Then, we headed back down the mountain, passing a number of small, beautiful waterfalls spilling out of the forest.
An hour later we were back in Portland and it was a sunny, summer day!
