Scene from The Godfather that was filmed at Pittock Mansion. <–click there! Go on! Click it!
We had originally planned to visit a winery today, but instead spent the afternoon strolling around the grounds of Portland’s Pittock Mansion. You may recognize it from the wedding scene in, “The Godfather.” The grand home sits high on a West Portland hill overlooking the city from 1000 ft. The mansion was built between 1909 and 1914, by Henry and Georgiana Pittock who did a lot to help turn Portland from a tiny logging camp into the booming city it is today.
The grounds and surrounding area provide a peaceful place to hike and/or relax. The mansion is literally surrounded by forests and walkable trails beyond the perimeter of the lawn.
The late Ms. Pittock loved flowers. In her honor, her flower gardens are still kept up around the mansion’s yard and in various flower boxes. The following shot was taken inside the carport beside the mansion.
Although they are pretty much at the end of their blooming season, there are roses all around the grounds.
I thought this couple fit right in with the whole scenario very well….except for the guy’s Docksiders, of course. 😉
Here is the view from the lawn when I was facing East:
The roses that remained blooming this week were very beautiful….many different varieties and colors.
It was a beautiful and peaceful day. Tomorrow….the winery and more photos.
Oh….and on our way out, we ran into Mr. Rocky here who says, “Hello from Portland!”
